Privacy Policy
The short version:
- The app does not collect personal information. There are no accounts, ads, analytics or tracking in it.
- Your microphone is processed inside your browser, in real time, to hear the notes you play. The audio is never recorded, saved or sent anywhere.
- Your settings, instrument calibrations and imported music are saved in your own browser, on your device. We never receive them.
- Our web host, Cloudflare, handles standard technical data such as your IP address in order to deliver and protect the site.
1. Who is responsible
Zaceos LLC, a Washington limited liability company ("Zaceos", "we", "us"), provides Ocarina Legend. You can reach us at legal@zaceos.com. This policy covers the Ocarina Legend web app, including Recorder Legend, Harmonica Legend and Sound Check (the "app").
2. What the app does not do
- It has no accounts and no sign-in.
- It does not ask for your name, email address, age or location. On the agreement screen you sign by ticking a box; no name is asked for.
- It shows no advertising and contains no analytics, advertising or tracking code.
- It does not set cookies, and it does not sell or share personal information.
- It does not record, store or send microphone audio.
3. Your microphone
When you choose microphone input and your browser gives permission, the app processes sound from your microphone on your device to estimate the pitch and timing of the notes you play. This happens in memory, in real time, while you play. The app does not record, save or transmit that audio, and we never hear it.
If you use Sound Check to calibrate an instrument, the app can save the results you choose to keep, such as which pitch each fingering produced and your notes on each hole. Those are measurements, not recordings, and they are saved only in your browser. Sound Check can also export them as a file that downloads to your own device.
You can switch the microphone off in the app, use keyboard input instead, or withdraw microphone permission in your browser settings at any time.
4. What the app saves in your browser
The app uses your browser's local storage and IndexedDB, on your device, to remember:
- Your agreement: which version of the Terms of Use and Privacy Policy you agreed to, when, and that you signed it by ticking the box on the agreement screen.
- Preferences: your instrument, size and fingering system, theme and accent color, lane colors, starting speed, sound and microphone settings, which microphone you picked, your favorite songs, and whether you have dismissed the notice about provisional fingering charts.
- Instrument calibration: named instrument profiles, which one is active, hole maps, per-fingering results and the Sound Check view you last used.
- Your music library: the sheet music files you import, and for photographed or scanned pages, the notes the reader found.
- Sheet-music reader settings: whether you prefer the quick or the accurate reading, the local address of the optional reader described in section 5, a count of how many imports have succeeded in this browser, and the identifiers of the recent successful imports, so that finishing the same import twice cannot count twice. Also whether you agreed to download the accurate reading's second reader, whether this device had to switch the accurate reading off because it ran out of memory or time, and a testing switch that is off unless someone turns it on.
- Your answers about imported songs: after you play a song you imported, the app asks whether it sounded right. It keeps your answer, when you gave it and any short note you typed, and the identifiers of the imports whose credit was returned, so the same import is never asked about or refunded twice. Your answer and your note stay in your browser and are never sent to us.
- A photo while it is being read: while the app reads a photographed or scanned page, it keeps a copy of the photo and the lines of music read so far, so a read that was interrupted (for example because your device closed the app) can finish when you come back. This copy is deleted when the read ends, whether you keep the result or not, and within 24 hours if the read is abandoned.
None of this is sent to us. We cannot see it, recover it or delete it for you. Browsers can also clear it on their own, for example when storage runs low or when you use private browsing.
To delete it, clear this site's data in your browser's settings. In most browsers this is under privacy or site settings, in a section called "site data" or "cookies and site data".
5. Sheet music you import
When you import a file, the app reads it in your browser and saves it in your browser's storage so it appears in My music. It is not uploaded to us.
Reading a photo of printed music. The game reads photos and scans of printed music in your browser. The first time you import one, it downloads its sheet-music reader (about 36 MB) from this website, the same way it loads its pages; your browser may keep that download so later photos start sooner. On a computer, the accurate reading downloads a second reader (about 17 MB) the first time you choose it, after asking you. Your photo is read on your device and is never uploaded to us.
The optional local sheet-music reader. You can also install a separate reader program and run it on your own computer. When the app opens, it checks whether that program is running by contacting the address 127.0.0.1, which only ever reaches your own computer. If the program is running and you import a photo or PDF, the file is sent to that program on your computer to be read. The program keeps working copies of the files it reads in its own folder on your computer; you can delete that folder at any time. Nothing from that process is sent to us. If the program is not running, the check fails and nothing is sent.
6. Our hosting provider
The website is hosted by Cloudflare, Inc. When your browser loads the site, Cloudflare necessarily receives standard technical information, such as your IP address, browser type, the page requested and the time of the request, and processes it to deliver the site, keep it secure and prevent abuse. We do not use Cloudflare's web analytics on this site. While access to the site is restricted, for example during private testing, Cloudflare Access sets a strictly necessary sign-in cookie for the people who are allowed in. Cloudflare's handling of this information is described in the Cloudflare Privacy Policy.
7. Children and classrooms
The app is for learners of every age, including children and school classes. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13, or from anyone else, through the app. Because the app does not collect personal information, it does not ask a parent for consent. Teachers can use it in class without creating student accounts or entering any student information.
If we ever add a feature that would collect personal information, such as accounts or cloud saving, we will update this policy before that feature is released and, where the law requires it, including under the US Children's Online Privacy Protection Act, obtain verifiable parental consent before collecting personal information from a child under 13.
Parents, guardians and teachers with questions can email legal@zaceos.com.
8. If you contact us
If you email us, we receive your email address and whatever you choose to write. We use it only to reply and to deal with your request, keep it only as long as needed for that, and delete it if you ask, unless we have to keep it to meet a legal obligation.
9. Your privacy rights
Because the app keeps your data on your device, you can access and delete it yourself as described in section 4. Depending on where you live, including the European Union, the United Kingdom and several US states, you may also have rights to ask what personal information we hold about you, to correct or delete it, and to object to how it is used. Email legal@zaceos.com to make a request. If you are in the EU or UK, you can also complain to your local data protection authority.
For people in the EU and UK: the only personal information processed when you use the app is the technical request data handled by our hosting provider, processed on the basis of our legitimate interest in delivering a working, secure website, and the contents of any email you send us, processed on the basis of our legitimate interest in replying. Cloudflare may process this information in the United States and other countries under appropriate safeguards.
10. Versions in app stores, and changes to this policy
If we release Ocarina Legend through a store or game platform, and that version handles any information differently from the web app, for example purchase records kept by the store or crash reports, we will update this policy before that version is released, and the store listing will describe it as well.
When we change this policy, we will update the effective date at the top. For material changes, we will also give notice in the app or on this page before they take effect.
